Cocktail Saturday: Eudora's (Jackson, Mississippi)

Wife E and I venture out once a month to a spot to try their signature cocktails.  We each order two drinks and give our opinions on if it's worth recommending (photos below).

It's easy to get a vodka/cranberry or rum/Coke just about anywhere, but where are the best places to go to get drinks that can't be offered anywhere else because they are exclusive to that restaurant?  That's what we aim to find out!

Eudora's is a whole vibe!  The restaurant is set in The District which is located in the Eastover part of Jackson.  It's a nice area with high-end apartments, businesses and restaurants.  There's a pavillion in between the restaurants that offer a play area for kids as well as a nice fountain to give a romantic environment.  A very pleasant place to hang out (or to live if you're ballin' like that).

When we entered we were welcomed by the host who offered a very sincere greeting.  He led us past the busy bar area that had a very neat and organized display of hundreds of bottled spirits.  I don't think there's a drink they do not have at Eudora's.

The decor is elegant without being too "frou frou" if that makes any sense.  Wife E described it as an "outdoor garden library".  There's a garage door that opens the bar area to the outside as well as a spacious patio spot.  There are books lining the back wall near the kitchen which is a tribute to the Mississippi author the restaurant is named after, the late Ms. Eudora Welty.

We decided to sit inside and we took a seat at one of the booths.  Despite the booths basically being back-to-back there is still a sense of privacy when you sit in one.  The back wall is pretty high and that allows your conversations to be somewhat confined.  The seats are high, so most of your torso will be above the table, but they are comfortable.

A server named "Bea" or "B." took our order and Wife E started off with the Quarter Tones To Ten (White Cosmopolitan).  It's Cathead Honeysuckle Vodka, white cranberry, fresh lime and New England spiced cranberry bitters.  The cost of this signature drink is $13.  She descibed it as a sweet, but tart drink that gives off hints of spice which gives this particular cosmo a refreshing twist.

I started with the Hours & Infinity (Mississippi Mint Julep) and I was not disappointed at all.  This $14 libation arrived in an extremely cold container that almost required the aid of a napkin just to grip and lift it.  However, I went in barehanded and the temporary loss of feeling in my fingertips was worth it.  This drink was very, very good.  The Woodford Reserve bourbon lended an oaky flavor to compliment the bright taste of the fresh mint.

For our second and final round of drinks, she finished up with a Keep The Change which she said was a classic dirty martini.  The $13 drink gave her the feeling of Carrie from Sex & The City when drinking it.  She sttuck her pinky out and everything because it made her feel fancy.

I got the '98 Mercedes (smokey old fashioned) that was not only one of the best old fashioneds I've ever had, but the presentation of this drink was pretty cool.  For $22, you can enjoy the smoky flavor of the Jack Daniels Bonded Tennessee whiskey that would make Chris Stapleton hit a high note.  Mix in a hint of rosemary and a dash of coffee flavor and you have yourself a drink worth telling your friends about.

Here's how we rated Eudora's:

Atmosphere, 10 - This is the place you can have a birthday dinner on a Friday night or have a romantic lunch on a Saturday afternoon.  Great, and I do mean great, customer service!  From host, to server, to manager, everyone was smiling and accommodating.

Taste, 10 - All four of our drinks had the taste of high-quality ingredients.  Despite Wife E being a Tito's girl and not a Cathead fan, she still had no complaints about the vodka in her drinks.

Price, 9 - The martinis are just $4 during happy hour, so that alone was a deal.  The drinks I had were pricey, but being that this place is a fine-dining establishment I was okay with it.  You get what you pay for at Eudora's.

Presentation, 10 - The above video link to the '98 Mercedes alone shows that they put a lot of thought into their drink presentations.  This isn't a place with ordinary glasses and ordinary drinks.  They get creative with it!

Variety, 10 - They have four signature martinis and six signature cocktails (plus a cocktail du jour that you have to request).  That's a nice selection of signature drinks to go along with the ton of options they have for your "regular" drinks.

It looks like Eudora's set the standard for fine dining restaurants we'll be visiting in the future.
